What to look for when hiring a contractor.

I meet and hear from many people who tell me that it is hard to find a good contractor. There aren’t any reliable ones out there.” “They don’t show up.” “They took my money and didn’t do the work.”

Hearing these horror stories is disheartening, as it gives a negative light to the great work that quality contractors do.

I wanted to share the following information to help you find and hire a quality contractor. I hope this information helps you.

If you are about to invest thousands of dollars into your home improvement projects, you should take the time to research a good contractor. You would do the research if you were hiring a babysitter or going on vacation. It is the same for contractors. Look for the following qualities.

5 Qualities of a Great Contractor:

  1. They are licensed with the state, carry insurance, and follow the required contract terms - The Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (“HICPA”) was adopted by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly in October 2008, and signed by the Governor as Act 132 of 2008.  The law establishes a mandatory registration program for contractors who offer or perform home improvements in Pennsylvania.  The statute also establishes minimum insurance requirements for contractors; requires contractors to provide their registration number in their ads and contracts; establishes required contract terms for home improvement contracts; prohibits unfair business practices, and creates a criminal penalty for home improvement fraud.

  2. They are passionate about what they do - Someone who loves what they do is much more likely to get the job done well.

  3. They are adaptable - A successful contractor must adapt to a constantly evolving industry, including the expansion and diversification of reliable and consistent products and materials.

  4. They come highly recommended – The best home improvement contractors sell themselves through the high praise of those they’ve helped. With websites like Angie's List and Google, it’s easier than ever to find reviews of contractors. If a contractor comes with dazzling reviews, this is a strong indicator they’ll do a great job. Keep in mind, however, that these reviews shouldn’t be the end-all-be-all of your decision. One should also do their own due diligence in ensuring the contractor is the right fit for the job based on experience and has an appropriate working style for the project, among the other tips mentioned here.

  5. They are honest - You can tell by the first impression. Do they show up on time? Are their vehicles/appearance clean and professional? Do they share their references? Do they share that they must follow a contract and payment schedules? These are all signs of honesty and integrity. If something seems off to you from the start then listen to your intuition. This person or company will be inside your house and near your family. Make sure you build a relationship of trust!
